Beardie FAQs
Please read our Bearded Dragon Enclosures article to learn about building a habitat.
Are bearded dragons good for first time reptile owners?
Yes. They are daytime reptiles, stay a manageable size, and respond to human presence. Most owners report predictable behavior with fun and easy interaction when lighting and diet are correct.
How big do bearded dragons get and how long do they live?
Most adults reach 16 to 24 inches. Many live 10 to 15 years with proper care, so buyers should be ready for a long commitment.
What do Beardies eat?
Bearded dragons are omnivores and eat a mix of vegetables and live insects. We primarily feed our dragons a variety mix of baby mustard greens, arugula, bok choy, and dandelion greens along with live Dubia roaches. They are accustomed to meal worms, horn worms, and have fun chasing crickets.
Do they need special lighting and heat?
Yes. They require strong UVB and a heat gradient to stay healthy. This is not optional for this species. Exact bulbs and setup will be covered in our husbandry posts.
Are bearded dragons generally safe for kids to handle?
Yes. Healthy adult dragons are usually calm. Baby beardies can be skittish but respond well to regular handling. All reptiles can carry certain bacteria on the skin so adults must supervise kids and enforce handwashing before and after handling. Families with very young children or immune issues should review CDC guidance prior to purchasing and animal for the home.
How do I know the dragon is healthy when I buy it?
Look for clear and alert eyes and watch that they track when being moved, full body weight, clean vent (cloaca or the single opening at the base of the tail through which the reptile's digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts all empty their contents), no stuck shed, and a dragon that is active. Reputable breeders list lineage and feeding status.
