Ball Python FAQs
Please read our Ball Python Care page to find out more.
Are ball pythons good beginner snakes?
Yes. They stay small for a python, move slowly, and are easy to hold. A buyer must still provide correct heat and an escape proof enclosure.
How big do they get and how long do they live?
Most adults reach 3 to 5 feet. Many live 20 to 30 years in captivity. This is one of the longest lived common pet snakes.
What do ball pythons eat?
They eat whole rodents. Frozen thawed (F/T) feeders are widely used in captivity. Feeding frequency drops as the snake matures.
Do ball pythons bite?
A healthy, captive bred ball python rarely, if ever, bites if it is housed correctly and handled with respect. Most defensive behavior comes from stress, improper temps, or handling right before or after feeding.
Why do some ball pythons refuse food?
This species is known for fasting. Low temperatures, too much visibility, new environments, or being in shed all reduce feeding response. Buyers should expect occasional refusals.
What is a morph and why does the price change so much?
A morph (phenotype) is a genetic trait, or series of traits, that changes color or pattern. Some morphs are common. Others are stacked or recessive and take years to produce. Price reflects rarity and clarity of genetics. Prices can range from less that $100 in a pet shop to over $10,000 for breeder quality snakes with very rare genetic combinations.
